markets in hierarchy – three classics
Teppo
Organizations and Markets has raised the issue of market-based management (or, infusion of market-mechanisms into organizations). Three important org theory articles (perhaps even 'Kingian' classics) in this domain are:
- Todd Zenger & Bill Hesterly's Organization Science (1997) article titled "The disaggregation of organizations: Selective intervention, high-powered incentives, and molecular units"
- Nicolai Foss' Organization Science (2003) article titled "Selective intervention and internal hybrids: Interpreting and learning from the rise of the oticon spaghetti organization"
- David Teece's Industrial and Corporate Change (2003) article titled "Expert talent and the design of (professional services) firms"
While a few of the above pieces have received limited attention (as proxied by subsequent citations), the numbers are quite low. Given what is happening in the organizational world (increasingly smaller org units, entrepreneurial dynamics etc) – I believe this area most definitely deserves more attention in organization theory.
Hi Teppo, Thanks a lot for advertising my Org Science paper on Oticon. The year of pub is 2003, however.
