must-read magazines for orgheads?

with 5 comments

Usually when I curl up next to the fireplace to read something, I tend to prefer a good non-fiction book, an issue of some journal, or just a random article.  However, there are also a few must-read/subscribe magazines for me:

  • Mind (Scientific American) — interesting articles, the publication largely avoids the pop psych stuff.  Its sort of an informed outlet for cognitive (and related) scientists to push their own research to a wider audience.  In fact, the most recent issue of the magazine has a primer related to collective agency (the piece indeed is written by the UNC philosophers).
  • Wired — cool, semi-techie magazine with interesting articles.  (For example, it alerted me to the new Stephenson book, Anathem, which I bought but have not read yet.)
  • The Economist — I don’t know, reading the Economist makes me somehow feel more connected to the world: in the US it seems nearly impossible to try to stay up-to-date on world developments (like, say, political intrigue in Cameroon) without the Economist.
  • American Arts Quarterly — if you are stuffy, like me, and you like old school art (though I certainly enjoy other varieties as well), you might enjoy the publication. It’s free.
  • Seed — all things science, interesting interviews, cool inserts, etc, etc.  A new favorite.

Once a week or so I take my daughters to Barnes and Noble, and usually I’ll also scan a dozen+ random magazines — the variety these days blows me away: the writing section is interesting and growing, the political stuff is fascinating, culture of course has occasional nuggets, photography as well, etc.  However, nothing new has recently caught my eye.

Drop a comment below if you have other favorites.

  1. Check out Cabinet – it’s artsy, but fun. Also features good art.

  2. Talking about art — here’s another great Ted Talk: “Tidying Up Art.”

  3. I like the Economist. And (like all writing instructors) recommend its prose as exemplary.

I also really like the New Yorker and Harper’s Magazine.

Then there’s the online poetry zines. Notably: The Diagram, Octopus, Word For/Word, Typo, Jacket and Fascicle.

  5. Trey: Thanks — a good list there: Foreign Policy, New Yorker, various book reviews, New Criterion, etc.
