  1. They had a song! Even when I worked for Japanese companies, we Americans never sang the Organization Song. I now belong to a local Macintosh users group, a local coin club, and even a local D&D Encounters and none of them has an anthem. I work now for a multi-national corporation, but, alas, no corporate carol to be sung.

Also, Bilbo is not the Leader of the troupe, but he is the key player. That is true org theory…at the worst, in a bitter and ironic way because the Alpha project manager reaps the rewards earned by the nerdly technicians… but consider that in baseball the strongest hitter does not lead off: he hits fourth…. and the team captain (catcher) bats eighth, again, as Bilbo was seemingly an afterthought.

Praise to Bilbo, though, comes via D&D Encounters where a strong warrior is helpful, but a good thief is a true asset to any gang of adventurers.

Indeed, The Hobbit offers much for organization theorists to chew upon.
