new policies at ASQ
Our friend Jerry “Chickpea” Davis has sent a notice to authors and reviewers of ASQ. As editor of ASQ, he’s announcing some new policies about how the journal is run.
- They’ll desk reject in a week and do full reviews in 7-10 weeks. They super-promise a 90 day review, max.
- No more “reject and resubmit.”
- No more “only 1 R&R.”* The editor can invite additional revisions if appropriate.
Also, a web site redesign that makes it easier to access ASQ. I wish Jerry the best in continuing ASQ’s record of excellence.

* Thank god. I’ve been burned … grrr…
Nice changes.
But – what do you mean by “no more 1 R&R?” I can’t stand it when journals drag you along for three-four rounds (and in some cases they may even reject after all that). I prefer a straight-up process: the editor likes the piece or not; if not, just let me move on and send it off to another journal.

“One round up or out” was a long-standing tradition that sounded good on paper but was violated frequently in practice. The large majority of papers that made it to publication went through multiple rounds of review, and got a lot better along the way. So: truth in advertising. (And we will do our best to avoid Sisyphusian revisions.)

Jerry: Ok, sounds good.
I had a bad, Sisyphusian experience with a different/un-named journal four-five years ago where my co-author and I were dragged along for 3 rounds of revision – then got rejected. Perhaps we deserved it. I suppose every academic has some nightmare story like this. Thankfully that particular piece quickly found a great home at another journal, where they spotted the genius of the argument.;) Overall, I think good work tends to find a home (even if it’s a “lesser” outlet, paper effects tend to trump journal effects – as Joel Baum has recently pointed out – and good work finds a way to somehow get recognized).

Speaking of recognition, Fabio inexplicably neglected to point to ASQ’s inviting new website full of awe-inspiring features, including a picture of a Barcelona beach and brief collections of articles covering every topic worth knowing:
