I thought it was cute, but my wife said that it was too real to be funny. I took on $68,000 to complete a bachelor’s (2008) and then a master’s (2010) and all it did was remove one objection in the hiring process for just about any job. … but it is the job that is missing. We all know that. Government numbers hide the facts. Fortunately, here in Austin, we have more work than in Ann Arbor, but none of it – or little of it – is fulltime and permanent. I am reading She’s Such a Geek (Newitz and Anders, eds) and several of the stories involve post doctorate work – one of them two such appointments – which validates the claim that like scientology, academia requires that you buy more levels to get ahead. On the other hand, several of the women found more success and satisfaction away from research schools, and even away from schools, entirely.

I wonder to what extent the Grad Skool Rulez are an affect of cognitive dissonance.
