congrats JC!

Congratulations to JC Spender – former orgtheory.net guest blogger (who is always welcome back) – for getting the Strategic Management Society (retrospective) best paper award in Vienna last week for his highly-cited 1996 Strategic Management Journal piece: “Making Knowledge the Basis of a Dynamic Theory of the Firm.” Well deserved – JC’s work has been path-breaking in developing the knowledge-based view of strategy and organization (plus he is among the best-read social scientists that I know). While I don’t agree with some of the epistemological premises of this paper (and JC has been kind enough to entertain many a friendly discussion and debate on these matters), nonetheless there is absolutely no question that this paper [and the associated special issue that JC edited] has shaped strategy in important ways. You can find a copy of his short ‘acceptance’ speech here.
Many thanks Teppo, flattery is always welcome. But note the Award was (a) shared with my exemplary colleague, Rob Grant, and (b) was for the whole Winter 1996 Special Issue, our papers and the editorial work we performed.
