book seminar – off the books: the underground economy of the urban poor by sudhir venkatesh

This semester’s book seminar will be dedicated to Sudhir Venkatesh’s Off the Books: The Underground Economy of the Urban Poor . Venkatesh, a University of Chicago trained urban ethnographer, is an associate professor of sociology at Columbia University. His first book, American Project, draws upon years of field work to describe the political and social organization of Chicago’s Robert Taylor housing projects. His new book should be of special interest to orgheads – it’s an account of the economy in poor neighborhoods. So starting on Feb 15, we we’ll start our online seminar and dig deep into this book. You can click here for our last seminar, which was about Donald McKenzie’s An Engine, Not a Camera.
