Here’s something that will interest you orgheads. Jerry Kim from Columbia Business School interviewed Ron Burt after the last Academy of Management meetings. The interview was published in the fall OMT (Organization and Management Theory) Newsletter. Among other things, we learn that Ron is interested in brokerage as process, that being a real-life broker is quite stressful, and that Ron has a Second Life avatar.

JK: I’m sure OMT newsletter readers are very curious a) if you have an avatar, and b) what that avatar is: CEO, movie star, hopefully not a super smart academic?

RB: I picked the boy next door, and as near as I can tell, he’s still running around barefoot. [Laughter] He’s in whatever form comes out of the shop. I like the neutrality.

So when you’re surfing through Second Life land, keep your eyes open for that lurking stranger with the boy-next-door look. He may be Ron Burt checking out your social network.

I can’t believe it took me so long to find this! C’mon people, email me this stuff when you see it.

  1. I would guess he is hiding behind the looks of Niklas Luhmann :-)

  2. On the internet, no one knows you’re Ron Burt.

  3. Also worth noting: He mentions “a nice blog written after the last Sunbelt” when discussing the state of the filed of networks, and it was clearly a reference to Orgtheory.net. So not only is Ron Burt surfing Second Life, but he’s also an Orgtheory reader as well!
