open thread on ASA 2008

Seems like people are trickling back from Boston. What were the best panels this year? Cool events? Complaints? Here is Kieran on the culture miniconference. Tina on enjoying ASA, post job & pubs. Andrew just eats it up! Other ASA 2008 links? Your comments?

  1. This was the best ASA conference I’ve ever attended (although for location you can’t beat Montreal), but I think my enjoyment of the conference is positively correlated with my finickiness in choosing sessions to attend. I was very selective this time. I probably missed out on seeing a number of good papers, but my strategy also decreased the quality variance in the papers I saw presented.

  2. I know this contradicts my own earlier statement, but I run a seminar for grad students on how to approach the ASA meetings. I tell them to subtract 15% from the apparent quality of a given session before deciding whether or not to go to it, since sessions are usually less good than they seem like they might be. One of my senior colleagues, talking about something he was working on, once said “of course it’s an ASA conference paper so it’s half-a**ed”.

  4. My take is here, and it includes a list of other ASA blogging I’ve found.
