geography of personality

Today’s Wall Street Journal summarizes an interesting study (from Perspectives on Psychological Science) highlighting how personality is ‘distributed’ across the United States (see figure below).

The study raises interesting questions about the differences.  What is their origin?  Cultural, environmental, genetic — or is self-selection involved?  The WSJ article offers various speculations by psychologists.
