dj qbert – the second coming of charlie parker

Hardcore hip hop fans have a well kept secret – DJ Qbert. Inside the world of DJ’ing, Qbert is recognized as a master. He’s been described as a sort of Charlie Parker, a person who simply transformed scratching as a form of music. In the 1990’s, he was quickly recognized as simply the best. He was runner up at the DJ USA 1991 competition and, with Mix Master Mike, he went on to win the DMC world championships 1992-1994.

Thereafter, he became one of the most innovative musicians, period. He produced what’s probably the first feature length scratching film (Wave Twisters), he’s developed new techniques for his instrument, promoted multiple-turntable music, and helped create new kinds of turntables. On top of that, the guy has impeccable technique and unquestionable taste in finding and mixing beats.

Here’s a youtube intro to DJ Qbert:

  2. I used to watch Q-bert videos in the late 90s, my raver days. There’d be all kinds of stoner-ific interludes (between scratch sessions, home and circuit) with hand puppets and bay area sights and sounds. Multi-talented for sure.
