soc phd programs #11: race and ethnicity
Previous editions: strat/work, education, org studies, culture, urban, soc psych, demography, political sociology, health, gender.
You know the rules: list programs strong in race/ethnicity. A program has to have at least 3 active faculty who can mentor grad students. Here’s one: UCLA – Walter Allen (race in higher ed), Cesar Ayala (race in the Caribbean), Ruben Hernandez-Leon (immigration/diaspora/border studies), Darnell Hunt (race & media), Mignon Moore (family/race), Min Zhou (race/immigration/Asian/Asian American). Put other programs in the comments.
Update: Gabriel adds – “you left out roger waldinger, vilma ortiz, meredith phillips, and rob mare. also, if you define “race/ethnicity” as comparative rather than just domestic then you should count another 3 or 4 of our macro historical people” Thanks!

Texas A&M: Joe Feagin (you name it, he does it), Nadia Flores (Latino/a Sociology, migration and immigration), Mark Fossett (urban sociology and social demography aspects of RE), Sarah Gatson, Joseph Jewell (intersectionality, the black American experience), Verna Keith (race and mental health), Rogelio Saenz (social demography of RE, immigration)…and there are probably about 6 more faculty members who touch on Asian Americans, race and ethnicity in Latin America, and other aspects of the race and ethnicity (broadly defined).
Penn: Camille Zubrinsky Charles (race in higher ed, social demography of race, and more recently post-racism), Chenoa Flippen (life course studies of racial-ethnic minority well-being, Latino immigration, RE inequality), David Grazian (urban sociology in relation to culture and race), Emily Hannum (gender and ethnicity, focus on China), Kristen Harknett (race, family and relationship formation), Grace Kao (race and interracial contact, adolescence, labor migration effects on children), Annette Lareau (race, class, and families), Tukufu Zuberi (social demography of race, race and research methods, Africana Studies…and the list goes on!).

I know this post is two years old, but as someone who looks frequently at ethnicity, this list seems really silly because it’s really “race and we’re not allowed to call Hispanic a ‘race’ so wink wink nudge nudge, we’ll call it an ethnicity.” but it’s still really race in America and things that we want compare to America. great, that’s totally fine but that’s not the end of “ethnicity”. That’s hardly even the beginning!
What’s funniest is when I opened this article for ethnicity my first thought was “Oh, I bet it’s UCLA”–but because of people no one mentioned, even in the correction! Rogers Brubaker and Andreas Wimmer are huge with people looking at ethnicity outside the US. It’s just frustrating for me because I keep going to talks on “ethnicity” in sociology departments and they keep being so, well, provincial. I now don’t go to talks about ethnicity unless I know the scholar or they’re trained as a political scientist or anthropologist.
