taking stock: four years of orgtheory
orgtheory.net “burst” onto the scene four years ago today. Here’s a few highlights and observations:
- We’ve had some brilliant (34 to be exact) guest bloggers.
- To date, there have been a total of 2,436 posts with 12,141 comments.
- We’ve had some vigorous debates about the legitimacy of blogging, what is bloggable, etc.
- orgtheory.net posts (Brayden just pointed this out to me) have now been cited in forthcoming scholarship, see this RSO [pdf] piece by Ezra.
- Fabio’s grad school rules have gotten lots of attention.
- The economics versus sociology debate remains a hot one.
- Performativity is a frequent topic (very frequent).
- We don’t shy away from long, article-length blog posts.
- Neither do we shy away from obscure sociological theory.
- orgtheory.net is both loved and hated.
- We’ve made presidential predictions/nominations.
- And, rubbed shoulders with the political elite.
- We like good books.
- Our evil, younger twin continues to pick on us.
- Scatterplot also teases.
- Sadly, this post by Fabio, about ferrets, remains extremely popular.
- There is one photo of the orgtheory crew (pre-Sean), well, and there’s this photo, fanny pack and all.
Beyond the above, there have been many gaffs, excellent posts, moments of brilliance as well as mediocrity, quite excellent (and not so) exchanges of ideas, fun debates, etc. Hopefully the blog will continue to provide a welcome distraction to readers, as it does for us. Thanks for engaging!
Happy Birthday, then!

Happy birthday, guys. While my first interaction with you guys was to raise a complaint, there is no doubt that you provide a very valuable resource for the field. Thanks! (BTW, Perrow’s chapter [http://www.business.ualberta.ca/MarketsOnTrial/~/media/University%20of%20Alberta/Faculties/Business/Faculty%20Site/MarketsOnTrial/Documents/Papers/Perrow.ashx] also cites an orgtheory post and maybe counts more because it is not a self-cite!)

Btw, here’s another cite to orgtheory (and only sort of a self-cite):

Might I add, that Fabio’s grad skool rulz have probably contributed to at least several graduate students not leaving the profession and having better prospects on the job market as an accomplishment?
Congratulations, here’s to many more years!

“Fabio takes the punches for all of us.”
That’s I’m the only one with the right to wear the fanny pack.
Mike3550: Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad these notes are helping folks out.
