all things gregorian chant
To balance out some of our “metal” posts, here are a few links related to Gregorian chant:
- Very cool directory of Gregorian chants, inchoro.net, with musics and lyrics.
- Of course the wikipedia Gregorian chant entry.
- Björk interviews chant-inspired Arvo Pärt.
- The New Liturgical Movement.
- Stanford’s William Mahrt keeps chant alive. Here’s an article on “Gregorian chant as a paradigm for sacred music.”
- The Guidonian Hand illustrated by William Mahrt (here’s the notation).
- David Hiley’s Gregorian Chant (Cambridge University Press) is a good intro: history, evolution, technique, the basics.
- A 1906 book (translation, in the public domain) on the New School of Gregorian Chant.
- And, lots of chant-related links at music.princeton.edu.
I’m still bitter that when my high school class voted to make our class mascot the Gregorian Ant, the vote was overturned because some people freaked out about having the class represented by an insect.
Although ending up as the Quantum Sheep was okay too.
