joel baum is growing a mustache in movember

Joel Baum is growing a mustache in November.  It’s for a very good cause. He is crowdsourcing the style of mustache he’ll grow.  Any famous social theorists that Joel could emulate?

Be sure to contribute to the cause!  Joel is raising money for prostate cancer awareness.  He asked if I would, in solidarity, also grow a ‘stache in November.  I think I’ll contribute $ instead.

He’ll post pics and ‘stache updates on his “mo space.”  Here’s the email Joel sent (posted with permission).

Dear all –

I am about to embark on an epic, and historic journey.  Specifically, starting tomorrow (Nov 1), I will begin growing a mustache.  And, I will grow it until Nov 30.

It will not be pretty.  It will be grey.

It will not make me look any younger.  It will be itchy.

It will not make me any easier to kiss.  It will confuse my poodle, Maggie.

Despite all the anguish it will create, some good may come of it if you are willing to do your part.  Specifically, while I am busy looking less pretty, older, and scratching, I hope that you will visit my “Mo Space” at

There I will post pictures of my progress, and you can support me in my suffering by helping me to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer.

As I begin my journey, however, I seek your advice and counsel.  To that end, I have posted a “mustache style guide” on my “Mo Space” and seek your advice on what to grow.  Please post your comments there to help some consensus will emerge.

As some of you will know, my father, David, had agreed to complete this journey with me.  He’d not had a mustache since his early 40s, and rightly so.  He looked awful.  So even persuading him to join me was a real accomplishment.  Unfortunately, David died October 18, and so I will sadly be soldiering on into Movember on my own.  I will be thinking of him daily as I shave around my upper lip, and keep my fingers crossed that I don’t look quite as bad as he did!

Many thanks to you all in advance for backing me up on this – emotionally, financially, or whatever way you see fit.

  7. Sam: As I mentioned in the original version of the post – I threatened to grow a mustache during the summer vacation – but one of my daughters literally began to cry when I told her about my plans (we now make fun of her phobia of facial hair). I’ll support Joel instead. (Is there an Imperial mustache web site somewhere?)

  8. Ah, I see. Poor girl. At least you now know how to get her to eat all her vegetables: eat or daddy will grow a mo! :P

The Imperial Mo website has just been set up today ( We’ll be trying to photographically document the day-by-day mo-volution there. Donations, tips and encouragement welcomed!

  9. Joel is going the “trucker” route. I don’t know – I can’t think of social theorists who’ve gone with that look.
