open uefa euro 2012 thread

The Euro 2012 Soccer Championship started today.   I’ve got the opening game playing on the TV next to me, Poland-Greece, while trying to simultaneously edit a paper.  Anyways, if anyone is watching and has thoughts – here’s an open thread.

Some good games coming up tomorrow: Denmark-Netherlands, Portugal-Germany (Group B is definitely the group of death).  And then Sunday: Spain-Italy.   Here’s the schedule.

  1. At least the “how long until the first embarrassingly bad officiating decision occurs” question is already answered!

  2. The Russia-Czech Republic game was excellent (missed Greece-Poland, so can’t comment).Looking forward to watching Saturday’s games.
If predictions/guesses are allowed – I think (or hope?) Netherlands will go all the way and win the tournament, Germany and France will be their toughest competitors. Spain will disappoint many and won’t get to the semi-finals. After Russia’s game today, maybe Russia will take the fourth spot in the semi-finals? Oh no, they’ve got a terrible draw and will face either Germany or Netherlands, according to my previous guesses, in the quarter final, and will probably lose).
It is going to be an interesting tournament.

  3. Hup Hup Holland!

There are some fun Ireland videos circulating: Jedward and the Green Cape and Thai Tims-Rocky Road to Poland.

I’m reading The Confusion by Stephenson while the games are on, which is fun because it’s set in France and Ireland in the 1690’s. Good stuff. Russia really surprised me today.
