it’s official – facebook is a waste of time

Recent research has shown a change in Facebook use. While users tend to retain accounts, people are now reducing their use of the website. The reasons? From a recent NY Times survey of Facebook users:

The main reasons for their social media sabbaticals were not having enough time to dedicate to pruning their profiles, an overall decrease in their interest in the site, and the general sentiment that Facebook was a major waste of time.

This may indicate that we’ve hit “peak Facebook,” in terms of the site’s popularity level. It’s now a standard tool for networking, but the novelty has worn off. People don’t feel the obligation to use it. Now, the main users will be people who really enjoy networking – young people, businesses/orgs and extroverted people. Still, a huge market, but far short of the all encompassing vision of some. Probably the time to dig deep into that “platform” strategy we were talking about.

  1. I could not disagree more with the headline on this piece. Facebook is very productive for seeing what old friends are up to and what they are doing with their lives.

People use Facebook for different purposes and so it may in fact be a waste of time if the purpose you’re using it for is one that is ill suited for the technology (or if it’s not well aligned with the other ways your friends on Facebook use it), but my sense is that it’s a perfectly good tool for maintaining weak tie networks. It’s not as good for professional exploration among non-academics – Linkedin is better for that – and it’s not as good for aggregating and collecting using information – Twitter is much better for that – but it works pretty nicely as a way to “stay in touch.”

    I’d like to see better research about how people use Facebook. I think this would be particularly useful when doing cross-national or cross-sector comparisons. My European friends seem to use Facebook more intensively as a way to coordinate academic and social events than do my American friends. Activists around the world continue to use Facebook as a primary coordinating mechanism. Many businesses use Facebook as an HR tool. I see this as a social media that is far from decline.
