i’m melting…where to get ice cream when you’re in NYC for ASAs

During a heatwave, thoughts turn to how to stay cool.   Take a clue from these critters and seek out some frozen treats.  If you’ll be here in NYC for ASAs and like ice cream, here are some possibilities.  Luckily for you, most have multiple locations, including outside of NYC.

– Jacques Torres ice cream sandwich: ice cream smashed between two large cookies embedded with slabs of chocolate gives new meaning to “Sugar Crush.”  Various Jacques Torres stores have special stands (call to doublecheck) and a dedicated ice cream store in Brooklyn.

Sundaes and Cones: ever wondered what corn ice cream tastes like?  Or sesame?  Or green tea?  Here’s your chance.

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory: another chance at sesame, green tea, and other exotic flavored ice cream in Chinatown.

Van Leeuwen artisan ice cream: for people who actually read the list of ingredients before consuming.

Shake Shack ice cream/milkshakes: wait in the much shorter “B” line if you’re not getting a burger.

Big Gay ice cream: soft serve that comes with a new social movement identity.

Momofuku soft serve: for adults who never outgrew savoring Fruit Loop-saturated milk.

P.S. Want a real meal before heading for ice cream?  Phil Kasnitz and Shamus Khan have posted their guide to dining in NYC during the ASAs at scatterplot.   Or, check out Eater NY.

  2. For really great vegan ice cream, I’d recommend Lula’s Sweet Apothecary on E 6th Street. It’s a little out of the way, but I’m always willing to travel for good vegan treats.
