lesson: get some sleep
A few fays ago, I saw this diagram from New York Magazine which cleverly illustrates how much some famous people slept. I love the circular lay out but it also has a serious message: get some sleep! People vary in terms of when they sleep, but most of them get lots of it.

I’m actually not a big fan of the circular layout. Visually, it’s hard to compare the length of time different people spend sleeping since the arch length representing any length of time is different depending on how far each line is from the center.

I had the same reaction as JD. Visually, it looks like Georges Simenon slept 1/3 as much as Gustave Flaubert, when in fact Simenon slept 8 hours per night to Flaubert’s 7. A Hipmunk-style interface would be better, if you really want to retain information about when people sleep and not just how long they sleep. (But, I’m with Fabio on the need for sleep!)

I feel like I could have made the same chart with not-famous people. What would the lesson be then? Or I could make a different chart with famous people who didn’t sleep much at all (Franklin’s daily diary in his autobiography suggests he slept 5 hours…). I’m not saying you shouldn’t get some sleep. I’m just saying this is pretty meaningless evidence that sleep matters.

@shakha: I feel like the reference group for assessing my accomplishments-to-sleep-hours might fall in the animal kingdom. Why not that chart?
