obama and immigration amnesty: let this be the first step toward free migration
On Thursday, President Obama is scheduled to make a speech where he will likely announce an executive order that curtails some of the worst aspects of our immigration system, such as deportation of individuals who were brought to our country as children. I fully understand that Obama is a politician, not a magician. Even if he agreed that migration restrictions are unwise, he probably won’t act to pardon every undocumented immigrant.
However, I do hope that tomorrow’s actions won’t be an excuse to restrict migration even more. Instead, I hope that amnesty, or deferral of action, will allow Americans to reassess immigration. I want Americans to realize that travelling from Mexico to Arizona is no different that travelling between North and South Carolina. As long as someone travels peacefully, leave them alone. Preventing someone from taking a job, or owning a home, or enrolling in school, based on their nationality is no different than preventing someone from taking a job because they are Jewish, Black, or female. It’s simply wrong.
So tomorrow, I will cheer for every person who can now sleep without the fear that they will be forcefully moved to another country. But at the same time, I ask my fellow Americans to think seriously about the morality of immigration restrictions and I hope that they see that is simply an unjust law. We need a new world, a world of open borders.

When is migration invasion? There is the ancient connection between Islamic migration into the Iberian peninsula, and now the pushing of the South American population northwards. The issue is invasion and the Islamic “””destiny””” bodes ill for the West.

@Fred, invasion means seizing territory with military force – not the migration of religious or ethnic groups you don’t like.

If you will recall, the Mongol invasions always involved the movement of large numbers of people well ahead of their military forces. Anyway, it is important to understand the reasons for large demographic changes. Since the end of the Cold War, there have been some 30M immigrants from south of the border, and appr half of these are illegals. The drug cartels and the So. American state governments are driving their people out. These countries have some of the highest per capita murder rates in the world. Mexico has been fighting an unrecognized civil war or revolution for the past 10 years with an excess of 30K or more murdered per year. Don’t get me started on their practice of kidnapping or “”techniques”” as found in the movie “The Counselor.” It just seems to me that things are out of hand. The US has been known as a refuge for persecuted people, but can’t we address these problems as part of our foreign policy?

Hypothesis 2 – the people coming from Mexico are actually a secret advanced force that will put drug cartels in the White House.

I don’t want to seem abrupt, the number of illegal aliens is quite high and so is the number of deportations which only occurs if the illegal has committed a crime. The attitude that the Mexicans are all Catholic and therefore peaceful, hard workers only goes so far. Why are they coming here, are they being driven out? If you are unwilling to address the conditions that have led them to leave their homes, then the notion that they are seeking jobs is meaningless. I noticed that you formed a ridiculous dichotomy out of my question, perhaps you could focus on the necessary analysis and provide some actual reasons.

Not to be excessively factual or anything but the European conquest of the Americas counts as invasion, not immigration, by all the standards in this thread. Regarding Frederick Welfare’s claim about deportations, my admittedly superficial research indicates that is it false. About 20% of deported immigrants have committed felonies per the information I can find. Most people don’t consider speeding tickets to be crimes. And a lot of deportations are for the crime of entering illegally, which you don’t get to count in this argument.
The claim that the drug war in Mexico involves really bad people doing really bad things is not inconsistent at all with the claim that people crossing into the US from Mexico are decent peaceful people doing so to find jobs and/or escape the violence and fallout from the drug wars.

Sorry to sound the whistle again, but the deportation rate is high and only those illegals, unless caught in the act of border crossing, caught doing crimes get deported, after serving time! Thanks for acknowledging a possible connection between the drug cartels and the movement of migrants. there is also the question of the difference between those immigrants who play by the rules and apply for immigration and the illegals. Something is driving the desperation. That is what I think should be addressed. You also mentioned EU conquest as invasion, yeah 400 years ago, can we get to current events!?

Please try to read more carefully. I simply brought up a past historical problem. The response of the US government to 9/11 was to install the Patriot Act and a new Institution, Homeland Security, because the threat of invasion was obviously at issue. Today, the illegal immigration rate is out of control and I asked others to consider why that is the case, to give possible reasons. Please try to stick to the topic and not react on the basis of your assumptions. What are YOU going to do if a thousand cells suddenly pop up and simultaneous enact mass murders as is the frequent case in the Middle East and South America?
