crim/deviance PhD programs?
Question: Someone asked me – good soc PhD programs for crim/deviance? Student is interested not only in elite programs (e.g., as long as Rob Sampson is at Harvard, it will produce good crim students) but also lower ranked programs that have solid placement records in crim/deviance. I don’t know about soc, but if that’s the interest why not target top crim programs (e.g. University of Maryland) as well? A lot of those profs will have been trained as sociologists too.

A few reasons: wants a broader training, degree more flexible, not 100% committed to crim so they want options.

Princeton was known for this for a while, but then lost Bruce and Devah. In the next tier, I would recommend U Minnesota, U Washington, Ohio State, and Northwestern. The CLS program at Irvine is also great if they are open to interdisciplinary programs. And Toronto if they’re willing to leave the US.

Oh, and Penn State, although their crim program is technically separate from the soc degree so not sure whether it counts as mainstream soc. But they do a good job of training/placing soc-inclined crim students.

For those not looking at the top tier, check out North Carolina State. We have a strong tradition in Crime, Deviance, and Social Control and our students place in very good jobs.

Also, Maryland would not be a bad option if he/she is willing to look for opportunities outside of their own department. The Center for Smart Growth, Population Research Center, and sociology department all offer excellent faculty and opportunities to draw links that will allow them to explore crim as well as other areas.
I would concur with Ohio State, Minnesota and University of Washington.

Under the radar would be the interdisciplinary program at Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College. Consistent placements at top crim programs around the country including 3x at UMD Crim, 2x Albany, Irvine, etc.
