I have a question for org.theory contributors and commentators. Why do sociologists find it so difficult to write interesting books, despite having considerable freedom in choosing their subject matter, extensive training in methods, research and (sometimes) writing, and while possessing the physical and financial resources necessary to pursue ambitious projects. By “interesting” I mean books that attract a passionate critical audience and that also, potentially, attract wide popular audience. Given the total volume of sociology books produced in any given year, we could round down to zero the number of interesting books on these terms. It strikes me that sociology is the best placed discipline to answer this question.
