A really good thing is that sociology now has real alternatives for publishing aside from books and traditional journals:

• SocArXiv: This is for working papers and is free.
• Sociological Science: Competitive and fast peer reviewed, open access.
• Socius: Similar to Sociological Science, but sponsored by ASA.
• PLoS One: Model – open access, but will publish any paper that is methodologically sound. Leaves judgment of importance to readers.

I think each has done very well and is a serious contribution.
