Sean Safford is an Associate Professor at Sciences Po (Institut d’études politiques de Paris) in the Center for the Sociology of Organizations.  His book Why the Garden Club Couldn’t Save Youngstown: the Transformation of the Rust Belt can be purchased here.  His research looks at social, technological and economic change, particularly in mature industrial regions.

    I really enjoyed the book, particularly because I’m interested in a lot of the work that you discuss in your book. I was actually in Allentown (as my wife and I live in Bryn Mawr, PA now) and it was really interesting driving around.

    My personal favorite research question is on first-ring suburbs in the Midwest. While I’m done with my Masters, and not thinking about a Ph.D any time soon, I’m fascinated about how various suburbs (whether streetcar or post-1945) developed in the midwest. I’m sure that a lot of your research can be used to explain some of the transformation of various suburbs since 1970.

    Keep up the good writing, and I’m looking forward to hearing more about your work in the future.

    My name is Roger Dewey, I am the President of the St. Croix Foundation in the US Virgin Islands. I have recently purchased your book because it is germane to our situation-our major employer a large refinery is closing, cutting over 2000 jobs (on top of 1500 they have already cut and removing 15-20% of our public sector income) and we are losing 20% of our GDP. Thus many, many more jobs will be lost.

    As a community foundation we understand the linkages you discuss and would like to know if you would be interested in a Caribbean vacation in the near future to speak at a forum we are planning in response to this news which is devastating for our community.
