Alfred Chandler, the great business historian, has passed away. Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok offer praise at Marginal Revolution. Chandler’s classic histories of the evolution of the modern business organization – The Visible Hand and Strategy and Structure – are staples of organizational theory comprehensive exams. Chandler had a strong interdisciplinary influence. In sociology, Chandler’s work inspired Neil Fligstein’s The Transformation of Corporate Control.
