  3. Maybe you should have asked for nationality too, that would make for a nice cross table :). And Spain is the reigning European champion, I wouldn’t call that underperformance…

  5. Australia! The only thing that stood between us and the last world cup was Italy’s diving routines! We’re now prepared for it. Our lads having been tacking tips from a cross-functional team composed of our best divers and synchronized swimmers. Can’t lose.

    A few comments:

    – Brazil’s strategy is a perfectly themed dance. No one can beat them to that.

    – The Spanish plan is Carthaginian: just send the elephants trampling forward.

    – The Dutch plan is just like the German’s, except there are seven or eight players on the attacking side.

    – The US plan is just like the Italian, but without the striker and the penalty.

    – I actually like Irish (Republic) football.

  12. Well Kieran, I think it’s high time you re-do the whole thing. In last 4 years there have been some incredible identity shifts in international soccer…..

    1. Spain is new Brazil
    2. Brazil is new Germany
    3. Germany is old Germany
    4. Portugal is new England
    5. England is new Italy
    6. Italy is new France
    7. France is ……….confused

    It separates the teams in a slightly different way as compared to Fabio. They include:
    -Emerging Country (Spain)
    -Italy (will retain WC after 2006)
    -Brazil (as one of the favourite teams)
    -Traditional Power (Germany or Argentina)
    -An Outsider (France or Portugal if they Qualify)
    -African Country (Ivory Coast or other)

  16. Other than the post above I have not seen one single serious prediction that Italy will repeat. I suspect Spain, Germany (if they can manage without Ballack), or Brazil will win. Maradona will ensure that Argentina will implode unless Messi decides to mimic his Barcelona performances at the national level.

  17. It seems unlikely Italy will win. They are usually a very cyclical team. Spain will end up losing to one of the usual suspects. This won’t be a World Cup without a scandal related to Maradona, and this is all we can say about Argentina. I would say that leaves Brazil and Germany as favourites. Hope performativity does not spoil things.

    Comment shows how underrated the Swiss are (were?). They played a fantastic World Cup in 2006 and would have gotten farther if they didn’t suck at penalties.

    Definitely a side to watch this time around.

    Definitely not. Germany was playing great against Australia. Reportedly there was some crappy refereeing, though.

    It must be said the two nations have an intense World Cup rivalry. Here is the stat attack (hey, it’s Autistic Pride Day):

    1954 quarterfinals – West Germany 2 Yugoslavia 0
    1958 quarterfinals – West Germany 1 Yugoslavia 0
    1962 quarterfinals – Yugoslavia 1 West Germany 0
    1974 second round – West Germany 2 Yugoslavia 0
    1990 first round – West Germany 4 Yugoslavia 1
    1998 first round – Germany 2 Yugoslavia 2 (YUG was leading 2-0)
    2010 first round – Serbia 1 Germany 0

    Did I miss anything? (I’m not counting Croatia)

    Postscript:

    One can tell from a ten mile distance that most of the Americans on this blog are bored to death with the World Cup comments. Something to inject a bit of energy: the US was apparently robbed today but have a good chance to qualify for the round of 16. I still have to watch the game.

    Nothing stopping them from going to Scatter and reading the Monopoloy thread. And remember that the orgtheory guys are mostly from soccer loving countries (DR, Ireland, Colombia, Finland, Idaho). I don’t know where Sean is from. I’ve always thought of him as the sweeper of this blog.

  34. The officiating today has been terrible. The referee ruined the Germany match and destroyed a terrific comeback by the Americans. I’m not watching the England-Algeria match, but by reading online commentary, it seems that the players are doing a good job of sinking that one.

  35. Today’s News: Africa down. Cameroon bumped, Ghana on the brink and South Africa needing a miracle after a 3-0 loss. Algeria, of course, is just looking for respect at this point. Are there any high points for African footbal this time around?

  41. In my view, it has been a disappointing World Cup so far. Either the ball refuses to stay down or the players are unable to adapt to it, the officiating has been poor on multiple occasions, and the players have seemed inclined to act churlishly more often than usual.

    I do not share this perception. However I agree that little of note has happened so far (however I would count Mexico, the USA and South Korea as teams that so far have done well). I guess we’ll have to wait until the knockout rounds to find out if there’s something worth noting.
